Why I practice integrative and functional medicine
I always knew that in some capacity I would work with people. I am intrigued by the way in which we are connected to one another and the world around us and by the power of the human mind. It amazes me how our mind, our behaviors, and our choices can be so intimately tied to our degrees of health as well as disease. I am drawn to stories of human existence – in the joy and suffering of our experiences and how we relate. In a way, our personal health speaks to the health of our communities, nations, and our planet. My journey to medicine is an extension of this love.
Integrative and functional medicine provides me with the framework to understand the entirety of the spectrum of health. I am able to take time to hear your story, find ways in which our mind and our choices as well as our histories and predilections affect how you feel and how to better thrive.
I have also been a lifelong patient
As a child and adolescent, I experienced frequent urinary tract infections requiring antibiotics and also fought malaria acquired overseas requiring long-standing medications. When I was a teenager, I suffered from terrible symptoms of PMS that promptly led me to 10+ years of contraception therapy advised by standard practice. It wasn’t until many years later, that I realized my lifelong struggles with eczema, allergies, reflux disease, hormonal imbalance, anxiety, and insomnia were all intricately connected to my previous exposures. All of this was with a backdrop of trauma during childhood, not to mention ancestral trauma, the effects of which we are finally beginning to understand.
I always felt isolated and guilty for carrying these issues – that I was broken somehow. Until I learned about integrative medicine. I began to discover how my symptoms were all connected. This is when my journey to connecting with my self – mind, body, and spirit – began. Through the practice of yoga, mindfulness, food as medicine, and more, I continue on my path to balance and happiness.
Health is a dynamic state
We weave in and out of states of health and distress and then return to equilibrium. This is what our bodies are designed to do. I look forward to the privilege of participating in your journey of discovery into a balanced, peaceful, and invigorated life.
